Washington Township Police use license plate cameras to resolve three cases
The Washington Township Police Department in Gloucester County, New Jersey, utilized automatic license plate-reading (ALPR) cameras to assist in resolving three separate cases over a busy weekend involving more than 400 calls for service.
In one instance, an ALPR alert allowed officers to conduct a high-risk stop and take a suspect into custody after he was flagged entering the township; the suspect was wanted for unlawful possession of a handgun. In a second case, investigators used ALPR data to identify a vehicle involved in a road rage incident where a driver displayed a handgun.
Additionally, the technology helped locate a missing person reported to be suicidal after an alert showed their vehicle had entered the township. The individual was subsequently located near Jefferson Hospital.
