Washington University Study: ADHD Stimulants Boost Alertness Over Direct Attention
A new study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine, published in the journal Cell, analyzed over 5,000 brain scans from adolescents with ADHD. The findings show that stimulant medications such as Adderall, Ritalin and Vyvanse primarily activate brain regions that support wakefulness and reward anticipation, rather than directly enhancing the neural networks traditionally linked to attention control.
The researchers describe the effect as a combined “arousal and reward” mechanism that helps patients stay on task. This challenges the long‑standing view that these drugs work by directly patching attention‑deficit circuitry, suggesting a need to rethink how ADHD treatments are understood and potentially prescribed.
