Washoe Valley Goni Fire contained as Nevada wildfire risks rise

The Goni Fire in Washoe Valley, located southeast of Washoe Lake near Carson City, has been contained after burning an estimated 25 acres. Incident Command reported that forward progress was stopped on Friday, September 25, 2026, leading to the lifting of evacuation warnings for communities south and east of Washoe Lake.

The blaze occurred during critical fire weather conditions, characterized by a Red Flag Warning. The National Weather Service reported southwest winds averaging 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. These warnings extended across multiple jurisdictions in western and central Nevada, as well as portions of eastern California.

In Northern Nevada, the frequency of wildfires has raised concerns regarding urban development in high-risk terrain. Reno is identified by Headwaters Economics as having the highest wildfire risk of any city in the United States. Recent developments have been approved within the wildland-urban interface, the zone where residential subdivisions meet open wildland, increasing exposure to fire hazards.
