Wasp activity increases during summer heat

Increased wasp activity during hot and dry weather has led to a perceived surge in wasp sightings. While insect researcher Martin Lödl notes that this is not a record-breaking year, he explains that heat makes the insects more active and visible as they search for food.

As the summer progresses, wasps shift their focus from protein-rich foods for larvae to sugary foods and drinks. To manage their presence, experts recommend covering food and drinks, avoiding sudden movements or blowing on them—as carbon dioxide can trigger alarm—and using a fine water spray to simulate rain, which may cause them to retreat.

Despite being perceived as pests, wasps serve an ecological purpose by consuming flies and other pests. Experts clarify that heat does not make wasps more aggressive; they typically only sting if they feel threatened or if their nest is approached.
