Wasp behavior and natural peppermint repellents

Wasp activity during summer meals is often attributed to high temperatures, but biological changes within the nest are the primary driver of increased presence at the end of the season. As the colony reaches its peak, the queen stops laying eggs after producing males and future queens, leading to a shift in the colony's social organization and behavior.

To manage wasps naturally without chemical sprays, peppermint can serve as an effective olfactory barrier. The herb contains concentrated essential oils, including menthol, menthone, and limonene, which are unpleasant to wasps and some Asian hornets, though bees remain largely unaffected. For best results, crushed peppermint leaves can be placed in pots around dining areas or near entry points to create a scented shield.
