Wasp prevention methods and legal protections

In Germany, only two of the eight native wasp species, the common wasp and the German wasp, are typically attracted to human food and drink. While wasps play vital roles in nature and are protected under the Federal Nature Conservation Act, they can be a nuisance during outdoor meals.

To deter wasps without harming them—as killing them can result in high fines—experts suggest using scents they dislike. Effective methods include using essential oils like tea tree or citrus oil, using sliced citrus fruits studded with cloves, or utilizing incense smoke. Experts advise remaining calm and avoiding frantic movements or blowing on the insects, as these actions can increase aggression.
