Wasps Hit Aggressive August Peak; Essential Oils Suggested for Garden Protection
Experts say that by August the routine inside wasp colonies breaks down and food reserves run low, causing workers to roam farther in search of food. This behavioural shift makes wasps more aggressive and increases the likelihood of encounters in gardens, patios and picnics. To reduce attacks, specialists advise keeping sweet foods and drinks covered, emptying bins regularly, removing fallen fruit, and avoiding sudden movements that may provoke the insects.
Strong‑smelling essential oils are recommended as a natural deterrent. Peppermint, clove, citronella and eucalyptus oils mask the scents that guide wasps to food sources, creating a short‑lived “no‑go” zone. Because sun, heat and wind quickly dissipate the fragrance, a one‑off spray offers only brief protection.
Summer 2026 has seen unusually few wasps in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Researchers attribute the decline to extreme spring weather – unprecedented heat combined with cold, damp days and chilly nights – which may have caused queen mortality or nest abandonment, reducing the initial population of founding queens. The national Big Wasp Survey has not yet begun its seasonal sampling, leaving data on the decline limited. Wasps play important roles as pest controllers, pollinators and decomposers, so their reduced numbers raise ecological concerns.
