Moldova and Romania implement new waste management and collection initiatives

In the Republic of Moldova, the government is launching a national plan to modernize environmental infrastructure. Under this initiative, households will receive three bins to facilitate the selective collection of vegetable, mixed, and recyclable waste. Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder stated that while legislation is nearly finalized, strict enforcement and fines will only follow once the necessary infrastructure, such as bins and storage spaces, is fully available to the public. The strategy also includes a 500 million euro project to close illegal landfills across the country in accordance with European Union standards.

In Romania, various regional waste management initiatives are underway. In Bistrița-Năsăud, a free collection campaign for bulky waste—including furniture, mattresses, and large toys—is being organized for rural residents between September 21 and 25. Similarly, ADIS Iași is conducting a campaign to collect bulky, textile, and hazardous wastes, such as paint cans and tires, in several localities. Meanwhile, in Târgu Mureș, local police issued 75,000 lei in fines to individuals caught abandoning bulky waste in public areas and near watercourses.
