Waste collection privatization sparks debate in Salto and Concordia
Debates regarding the privatization and outsourcing of public waste collection services are intensifying in the region. In Salto, Uruguay, critics argue that transferring public functions to private entities under the guise of service improvement follows a neoliberal ideology that increases inequality and weakens social protections.
In Concordia, Argentina, Councilwoman Carolina Amiano has raised concerns regarding Public Tender No. 47/2026 for waste collection. Amiano alleges that the process appears designed to benefit the company VITSA, noting that the company began operating in the city shortly after an environmental emergency ordinance was approved. She highlighted issues including a divided evaluation commission, incomplete documentation provided to competitors, and unanswered requests for information.
