Waste disposal sites in Tangerang and Pati experience fires
Waste disposal sites in Indonesia have recently experienced fires, prompting investigations and mitigation efforts by local environmental agencies.
In Tangerang, the Rawa Kucing landfill caught fire on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The Tangerang City Environmental Agency (DLH) is investigating the cause of the recurring incident, which has caused trauma for local residents. To prevent future occurrences, the agency has implemented 24-hour patrols across four directions and activated heavy machinery, including excavators and bulldozers, for night shifts. The agency has also prepared water tanks to be deployed directly to the landfill to quickly extinguish any new hotspots.
In Pati, Central Java, the Plosojenar waste disposal site caught fire again on Monday, October 26, 2026. The Pati Environmental Agency suspects the blaze was triggered by embers from a previous fire on September 23, 2026, that had not been fully extinguished. Officials noted that hot weather and wind likely caused the remaining embers to flare up. Firefighting efforts in Pati have faced challenges due to limited water supplies, as many government water tankers are currently being diverted to assist villages suffering from drought.
