Waste management and pollution concerns rise in Dénia and Enguera

In Dénia, the group Cultura Sostenible Dénia has raised concerns regarding the environmental impact of traditional festivities. During recent parades, including the Moros y Cristianos and children's parades, streets were left covered in confetti, plastic, bottles, and cigarette butts. The group warns that modern confetti contains microplastics and chemical inks that do not biodegrade and can contaminate the environment for 600 years, potentially clogging sewage systems. They note that such materials are already banned in several other European cities.

In Enguera, the local group Enguera Nos Une is opposing a new door-to-door waste collection system scheduled to begin on October 14. The group criticizes the projected increase in waste management fees, which could rise from 26 euros in 2024 to over 100 euros by 2027. They are also calling for better management of billing errors following the delegation of services to the Mancomunitat de la Costera-Canal and have expressed concern over the financial burden on families due to the timing of these payments alongside property taxes.
