Waste management and recycling initiatives reported in Venezuela and Spain
In Venezuela, the Ministry of Ecosocialism is advancing an industrial project in La Guaira to produce ecological building blocks. Located at the Playa Escondida Final Disposal Center, the initiative uses fine aggregate derived from construction and demolition waste (RCD). The production process involves crushing and classifying waste, mixing it with cement and water, and incorporating recycled PET plastic to enhance resistance. Technical tests show that specific formulations can produce between 15 and 23 blocks per mix.
In Spain, the city of Burgos has launched an environmental awareness campaign titled ‘Reciclar es cuidar de lo nuestro’ in collaboration with Ecoembes. The campaign addresses the fact that 65% of the city's waste is currently deposited in grey containers, and over 50% of all collected waste ends up in landfills. This contrasts with the municipal goal of reducing landfill waste to 10% by 2035. The initiative includes an exhibition of 12 panels across various city landmarks to educate citizens on proper waste separation.
