Waste management and sanitation challenges in Port-Gentil and Antananarivo

In Port-Gentil, residents and business owners along the Cosmos-Bouchonbouchon axis have begun cleaning their surroundings to mitigate flood risks ahead of the rainy season. While locals have cleared gutters and gathered waste in accordance with municipal guidelines, the refuse remains piled along the roadside. Residents report that these accumulations are obstructing traffic and commercial activities, and they are calling on municipal services to collect the waste and clear blocked drainage channels to prevent flooding.

In Antananarivo, sanitation efforts are being hampered by a lack of civic responsibility. Despite the mobilization of teams by the Commune urbaine d’Antananarivo (CUA) to clean streets and canals, waste continues to accumulate in inappropriate areas. Workers report finding various types of debris in contaminated waters, including plastic bags, medical waste, and large industrial items that are difficult to process. Experts note that while municipal cleaning operations are ongoing, the effectiveness of these actions is undermined by citizens continuing to dispose of trash improperly.
