Waste management challenges persist in Ludhiana and Pune

Municipalities in India are addressing growing waste management challenges through regulation and enforcement. In Ludhiana, the vegetable market continues to face scrutiny regarding waste disposal despite a 10.29 lakh fine imposed in 2025 for violating environmental norms. Reports indicate that heaps of spoiled produce remain in the market, and there are allegations that untreated contaminated liquid from waste compactors is being discharged into nearby vacant plots.

In Pune, the municipal corporation has launched a survey targeting ‘bulk waste generators’—including housing societies, hotels, hospitals, and educational institutions—that produce more than 100 kg of waste daily. These entities are required to register on the Central Pollution Control Board’s online portal and implement on-site waste segregation and processing. The initiative aims to reduce pressure on the Moshi waste depot by promoting decentralized processing and composting.
