Waste management disputes arise in Araguatins and Mafra

In Araguatins, Brazil, a 50-year-old merchant was caught dumping septic tank waste along Avenida Castelo Branco. The incident raised concerns regarding soil contamination and public health risks. While the Military Police and the Municipal Secretariat of the Environment were notified, and the individual promised not to repeat the act, there is currently no clarity on whether formal sanctions or environmental repairs will be enforced.

In Mafra, Portugal, a political dispute has emerged regarding the Abrunheira landfill, which serves Mafra, Cascais, Sintra, and Oeiras. The Mafra Municipal Council approved a declaration of “public interest” for the site, a move requested by the waste management company Tratolixo to extend the landfill's lifespan by three years and increase capacity by 1 million tons. However, PSD councilors have voted against the proposal, arguing it harms local populations and lacks transparency. The final decision now rests with the Municipal Assembly.
