Waste management guidelines clarify recycling rules for households

Guidelines for household waste separation emphasize the importance of proper sorting to improve recycling efficiency. In Belgium, empty metal aerosol cans from cosmetics, such as deodorant or hairspray, are permitted in PMD (Plastic, Metal, and Drink cartons) bags, provided they are completely empty. However, aerosol cans containing hazardous substances like pesticides or lubricants must be taken to recycling centers as small hazardous waste.

In the Netherlands, the municipality of Zoeterwoude is introducing stickers on PBD (Plastic, Metal, and Drink cartons) containers to serve as visual reminders of what can be recycled. The goal is to reduce contamination, as improper waste can hinder the recycling process. Residents are advised that packaging does not need to be cleaned, but it must be empty.

Regarding paper and cardboard recycling, envelopes with plastic windows do not need to be separated from the paper; the small amount of plastic can be removed during the industrial recycling process. While newspapers, magazines, and cardboard boxes are acceptable, greasy or heavily soiled paper and drink cartons (which belong in PMD) should be excluded from the paper stream.
