Waste management incidents reported in Costa Rica and Peru
In Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica, a municipal waste collector was injured on Monday, October 19, after coming into contact with improperly discarded broken glass. The incident occurred near Liceo Fernando Volio in Palmares de Daniel Flores. The worker was scheduled for evaluation by the municipality and a subsequent referral to the National Insurance Institute (INS). The municipality issued a warning regarding the dangers of incorrect waste disposal, advising citizens to place broken glass in sealed, labeled cardboard boxes or plastic containers.
In the Vítor district of Peru, a driver was injured on Tuesday after a truck carrying solid waste overturned on the Panamericana Sur highway. The driver sustained an apparent arm fracture and other injuries, requiring assistance from other motorists and transport by police and Serenazgo to a local health center. The accident caused waste to scatter across the road, restricting vehicular traffic as the vehicle remained on its side, blocking both lanes.
