Waste management initiatives and infrastructure gaps highlighted in Ghana and Botswana
In Ghana, the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) has warned that Kumasi lacks any waste transfer stations. Executive Secretary Ama Ofori Antwi stated that the city requires four to five such facilities to manage waste effectively. The shortage forces collection trucks to travel longer distances to landfills, increasing costs and the risk of illegal dumping. Additionally, ESPA noted that the six existing stations in Accra are currently operating beyond their capacity.
Meanwhile, in Botswana, the 3rd Annual Sustainable Recycling and Waste Management Summit is scheduled to take place in Kasane from October 7 to 8. Organized by Rolink Noble Health (Pty) Ltd, the summit focuses on the circular economy and turning waste into economic opportunities. The event aims to facilitate collaboration between government, business, and civil society to move from theoretical discussions to practical resource recovery and recycling solutions.
