Waste management initiatives and recycling debates in Australia

Wollongong City Council has announced free green waste drop-off events for residents throughout November. The program aims to help citizens manage excess garden waste during spring and reduce bushfire hazards by removing fallen leaves and overgrown vegetation. The free drop-offs will be held at Rex Jackson Park in Helensburgh, Fred Finch Park in Berkeley, and Ray Robinson Oval in Towradgi. Accepted materials include leaves, small branches, and garden prunings, provided branches are no larger than 75 mm in diameter and 1 m in length. Residents must provide proof of address and cannot use the service for commercial purposes.

In the Australian Capital Territory, the ACT Greens have called on the government to implement a free and convenient soft-plastics recycling plan. Party leader Jo Clay noted that while construction has begun on a new Materials Recovery Facility in Hume, soft plastics will not be among the materials recovered. Currently, Canberra residents must use paid services like RecycleSmart or Terracycle to recycle soft plastics, or rely on specific supermarket collection programs. The Greens are advocating for a public service similar to kerbside pick-up options available in other Australian jurisdictions.
