Waste management issues reported in Dominican Republic and Spain

In the Dominican Republic, the Duquesa landfill project faces scrutiny due to low budget execution. As of October, only RD$ 31.3 million of the RD$ 932.8 million allocated for integral solid waste management through 2026 has been spent. This represents an execution rate of just 3.35%, leaving 96.65% of the funds unspent and raising questions regarding the speed of infrastructure development in the capital.

In Spain, the waste management company Sogama reported increasing financial losses, projecting deficits to exceed 10.2 million euros in 2027. To address this, Sogama plans to increase the waste treatment fee for municipalities by 3.5% next year, aligning with estimated inflation. The cost per ton will rise from 111.13 euros to 115.02 euros. Under waste management laws, local councils are required to pass these costs on to citizens, which may impact household waste bills.
