Waste management updates implemented in Bari and Brindisi
New waste management systems have been launched in the Italian cities of Bari and Brindisi to improve recycling efficiency and urban decorum.
In Bari, the Madonnella and Umbertino neighborhoods have transitioned to a smart bin system. Starting November 1, 204 containers across 51 stations require a smartphone app with a QR code or a magnetic card for access. This system covers unsorted waste, paper, plastic, and organic matter, while glass collection remains via traditional green bins. To assist residents, Amiu Puglia has deployed 15 facilitators to provide technical support. New disposal hours have also been established by mayoral ordinance: 12:30 to 22:30 from November to March, and 18:30 to 22:30 from April to October.
In Brindisi, two new guarded ecological islands have become operational in the Centro and Bozzano districts. Located on via Spalato and viale Inghilterra, these fenced facilities are equipped with video surveillance. Unlike standard collection points, these sites feature qualified operators to assist citizens with the correct disposal of paper, plastic, metal, organic waste, and glass, focusing on environmental education and support.
