Waste remediation efforts underway in Gospić and Orjen

Environmental remediation projects are progressing at two separate sites in Croatia and Montenegro to manage illegal or buried waste.

In Gospić, Croatia, at the former PPK Velebit site, workers have begun the temporary covering of buried waste using a green impermeable geomembrane. The project, valued at approximately 270,000 euros, aims to prevent rainwater from penetrating the waste and creating leachate. The work involves terrain shaping and the construction of drainage channels to manage runoff. This measure is a precursor to the final removal of the waste.

In Montenegro, near the Orjen Nature Park, a project to remove illegally dumped tires from the Duboki do location has successfully cleared 60 tons of waste. Supported by a 50,000 euro grant from the Eco Fund, the initiative is a joint effort between the Municipality of Herceg Novi and the company Čistoća. The collected tires are being transported to the Podgorica landfill to be processed into raw materials. Approximately 250 tons of tires remain to be removed, with completion expected by early next year.
