Waste separation guidelines for consumers

In anticipation of World Cleanup Day on September 20, 2026, experts from ARAG have provided guidance on proper waste separation to prevent collection services from refusing to empty bins.

Residual waste bins should only contain items that are difficult or impossible to recycle, such as hygiene products, ash, cigarette butts, ceramics, mirror or window glass, and soiled or coated paper. Items that must not be placed in residual waste include plastic, metal, glass, paper, cardboard, batteries, electrical appliances, construction debris, and hazardous substances.

Waste disposal companies are permitted to refuse collection if bins are incorrectly filled or overfilled, such as when lids cannot close. Specific errors include placing diapers in paper bins, electrical devices in residual waste, or compostable plastic bags in organic waste bins, as the latter can compromise compost quality. Because regulations vary by municipality and federal state, residents are advised to contact local waste management services if they are uncertain.
