Italy consumer prices rise 63% over 25 years as utility costs surge
Recent data from Istat and Codacons highlight significant shifts in the Italian economy and consumer habits between 2000 and 2025. Overall consumer prices in Italy have risen by 63% over the last 25 years. The most dramatic increases were seen in housing and utilities, which rose by 119%, driven largely by a 145% surge in electricity and gas costs. Fuel prices also saw a massive 147% increase, while food and beverage expenses rose by 87%.
Regarding food consumption, spending on ready-to-eat meals and prepared foods surged by 254% between 2015 and 2025. While nominal spending has increased, real consumption—adjusted for inflation—has seen a decline, with some studies indicating an 8.7% drop in real household spending since the pre-pandemic period.
Efforts to combat food waste are gaining international recognition. The Waste Watcher International Observatory, led by the University of Bologna, has seen its methodology adopted as a global best practice. Recent data shows a positive trend in domestic food waste in Italy, which has decreased to an average of 493.7 grams per person per week, an 11.2% reduction compared to the same period in 2025.
