Wastewater DNA analysis reveals community dietary patterns

Researchers from Duke University School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have developed a method to study community dietary habits by analyzing DNA fragments in wastewater. This approach, utilizing DNA sequencing technology called FoodSeq-FLOW, aims to overcome the inaccuracies of traditional food diaries and surveys, which often suffer from participant forgetfulness or intentional underreporting.

The study analyzed wastewater from 19 North Carolina communities, representing approximately 2.1 million residents. The findings revealed distinct dietary patterns linked to demographics and geography: wealthier neighborhoods showed higher levels of hop DNA, immigrant communities exhibited more traces of tropical fruits and beans, and coastal areas showed increased DNA from seafood such as drum, Spanish mackerel, and triggerfish.

To validate the reliability of the technique, researchers compared wastewater DNA results with DNA profiles from stool samples collected in Durham. The close similarities between the two datasets suggest that wastewater analysis can accurately reflect the collective diet of a community without identifying specific individuals, offering a new tool for public health monitoring.
