Wastewater mismanagement reported in Mexico and Spain

Reports from different regions highlight growing concerns regarding improper wastewater management and its impact on local environments and agriculture.

In José María Morelos, residents have reported the dumping of sewage from septic tanks into the municipal landfill. Local farmers noted that trucks have been seen discharging liquid waste, which emits a nauseating odor. The lack of fencing and surveillance at the site has reportedly allowed for unauthorized dumping, prompting calls for public services to intervene.

In Villanueva del Fresno, Spain, a local farmer is contesting the discharge of municipal wastewater into agricultural land. The resident claims that during periods of heavy rain, the sewage network lacks sufficient capacity, causing overflows that contaminate water used for irrigation and livestock. While the environmental management consortium, Promedio, maintains that the system is functioning normally and that overflows are authorized relief measures during rainfall, the farmer reports that the contaminated water has forced him to sell livestock.
