Peru implements flood defenses amid El Niño climate risks

Peru is intensifying its disaster preparedness as the El Niño phenomenon causes sea temperatures to reach 27 °C and advances the rainy season by three months on the northern coast. Experts warn that the 2026-2027 episode could see rainfall levels exceeding historical averages.

In response, the Peruvian government has inaugurated significant river defense works in Chincha and Cañete. In Chincha, an investment of S/ 808.8 million has funded over 62 kilometers of rock dikes and protection walls, benefiting approximately 39,371 residents. In Cañete, projects aim to protect 1,200 hectares of agricultural land and support water supply for 16,000 hectares.

Additional preventive measures are underway across the country. The National Water Authority (ANA) is installing dynamic barriers in Huarochirí and Lurigancho-Chosica to mitigate debris flows. Meanwhile, INGEMMET is conducting geological hazard assessments in Cajamarca to identify critical zones following a state of emergency declaration due to imminent rainfall risks.
