Water contamination affects schools in Coronel Portillo

An official report has revealed critical water contamination in schools across the Coronel Portillo province, specifically affecting Pucallpa, Callería, Yarinacocha, and Manantay. Laboratory analysis conducted by the Executive Directorate of Environmental Health (DESA) found that 50% of the analyzed well water samples tested positive for Escherichia coli and thermotolerant coliforms.

Specific institutions, including Jorge Chávez, La Casita del Saber, and I.E. N.° 465 La Perla, showed significant bacterial presence. Furthermore, testing revealed 0.0 mg/L of free residual chlorine in all samples, indicating a total lack of water treatment or disinfection. The report highlights that water providers are operating informally without required quality control plans or official registration, leaving students vulnerable to gastrointestinal infections and parasitic outbreaks.
