Water contamination reported in Nišava River and Medvednica

Water quality concerns have been reported in two separate regions. In Serbia, the Institute of Public Health Pirot conducted sampling of the Nišava River near Dimitrovgrad following reports of contaminants. Testing at two locations revealed the smell of petroleum derivatives and visible oil slicks on the water surface. The water has been classified as Class V, indicating poor ecological status. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid direct contact with the water, refrain from fishing or consuming fish from the area, and avoid using the river for livestock or irrigation until further notice.

In Croatia, laboratory results from the Dr. Andrija Štampar Institute of Public Health have confirmed microbiological contamination in water sampled from a source near Kraljičin zdenac on Medvednica. The analysis showed high levels of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci, as well as over 2,420 coliform bacteria per 100 milliliters. While chemical parameters such as pH, turbidity, and nitrate levels remained within acceptable limits, the microbiological findings indicate the water does not meet standards for human consumption.
