Water filtration experts warn of risks in home systems

While consumer products like the Hydrofast C300 offer advanced 4-in-1 water solutions—including reverse osmosis filtration, cooling, heating, and carbonation—experts urge caution regarding home water filtration in the Netherlands.

The RIVM states that Dutch tap water is among the best in the world, meeting strict legal quality standards that make additional home filtration largely unnecessary for most households. While consumers often seek to avoid substances like PFAS, experts warn that home filters can pose health risks if not maintained properly.

Researchers from the University of Twente and the organization Milieu Centraal highlight that stagnant water within filters can become a breeding ground for bacteria and microorganisms. If filters are not cleaned or replaced regularly, they may actually decrease water quality compared to direct tap water. Additionally, systems using reverse osmosis can strip essential minerals from the water.
