Water identified as the main cause of concrete deterioration
Concrete structures deteriorate when water infiltrates the material and remains trapped in its pores. Over time, the water expands, freezes, and causes cracking, spalling, discoloration, mold growth and corrosion of reinforcing steel. Visible signs include exfoliation of surface layers, staining, and flaking paint. The damage is accelerated by rain, snow, irrigation, cleaning, flooding and ambient humidity, which all introduce water into the porous concrete matrix. Regular sealing of concrete surfaces can limit water ingress and reduce long‑term degradation.
