Water infrastructure crisis impacts Mozambique and Gaza

In Mozambique, the NGO Save the Children has invested approximately $100,000 to rehabilitate the water supply system at Chibuto Rural Hospital in Gaza province. The system was previously destroyed by flooding during the 2025-26 rainy season. The project included the delivery of cleaning materials and the installation of an incinerator to improve sanitation and hygiene. This intervention follows a severe rainy season in Mozambique that claimed 314 lives and affected over one million people.

Separately, in Gaza, water and sanitation infrastructure remains severely damaged following three years of conflict. According to UN data, 91 percent of households have experienced moderate-to-high water insecurity. Reports indicate that 88 percent of above-ground water, sanitation, and hygiene assets have been damaged, while water production has fallen to roughly 40 percent of pre-war levels. Electricity shortages and damaged desalination plants continue to undermine the ability to provide safe water to the population.
