Water infrastructure expansion underway in Uganda and Kenya

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has announced a multi-billion expansion programme to address water supply challenges in Kampala and other growing urban centers in Uganda. To combat intermittent supply caused by rapid population growth and aging infrastructure, the corporation is expanding production, transmission networks, and storage facilities. One major initiative, Package 2B, involves laying 70 kilometers of pipelines and constructing reservoirs, with an expected completion date in August 2027.

In Kenya, the National Council for Nomadic Education is seeking consultancy services to design and supervise water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure across 12 arid and semi-arid counties. Supported by the African Development Bank, the project aims to improve school retention and resilience in these regions through proper hydrogeological investigation and groundwater development. The initiative emphasizes that sustainable water access is critical for education, food preparation, and hygiene in nomadic areas.
