Water infrastructure projects underway in Alphen aan den Rijn and Ouderkerk aan de Amstel

Water management and infrastructure projects are underway in the Netherlands to improve supply reliability and flood protection.

In Alphen aan den Rijn, water company Oasen is beginning construction on a new drinking water transport pipeline at the end of September. This pipeline, part of a larger connection between Gouda and Alphen aan den Rijn, will serve as a second supply route to ensure more reliable service for approximately 170,000 residents in Alphen aan den Rijn, Leiderdorp, Zoeterwoude, and surrounding areas. Construction involves guided drilling under roads, which will cause temporary closures on the Quadriviumlaan and Zuiderkeerkring through mid-December.

In Noord-Holland, the Amstel, Gooi en Vecht water board has completed dike reinforcements in the village center of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. These improvements, which include the installation of a steel sheet pile wall, protect the Nieuwe Bullewijk and Holendrechter- and Bullewijker Polder Noord. Additionally, work is nearing completion on the Rondehoep water storage area. This emergency inlet is designed to be used only in extreme circumstances, such as exceptional rainfall combined with high sea levels, to manage water levels during rare flood risks.
