Water Lantern Festival to debut in Chapultepec for Day of the Dead

The Water Lantern Festival is coming to the Lago Mayor in the Bosque de Chapultepec, Mexico City, as part of the Day of the Dead celebrations. Scheduled for October 30, October 31, and November 1, the event features a ritual inspired by the lantern celebrations in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Participants can write messages—such as wishes, thanks, reflections, or dedications to loved ones—on lanterns to be released onto the water. The festival will include live music and gastronomic offerings. While general access to the area is free, attendees must purchase a kit to participate in the lantern ritual. To minimize environmental impact, organizers stated that the lanterns will be made from sustainable materials and use reusable LED candles, with cleaning operations scheduled after each day.
