Water levels drop significantly in Moldova's Nistru and Prut rivers

Water levels in the Nistru and Prut rivers, along with most smaller rivers in the Republic of Moldova, are expected to remain significantly reduced through October 16. The Hydrometeorological Service has issued various alerts, including Red, Orange, and Yellow codes for different river sectors.

On the Nistru River, a Red Code is in effect, with water discharge estimated at approximately 20% of the multi-annual monthly average. In the sector between Naslavcea and Camenca, levels may drop even lower depending on daily discharges from the Novodnestrovsk reservoir in Ukraine. On the Prut River, water levels are also declining, with a 10 cm drop recorded in 24 hours near Leușeni.

Smaller rivers are also facing critical shortages. The Ichel River is under a Red Code, with discharge projected at 15% of the average, while rivers such as the Draghiște, Cubolta, Ciulucul Mic, and Botna may see levels drop to 10% or less. Authorities are urging the population and economic agents to use water resources rationally.
