Water management and irrigation infrastructure face strategic challenges in Europe
Water management and irrigation infrastructure are facing significant strategic challenges in Europe. At recent national forums in Spain, including the Spain Smart Water Summit 2026 and the Hablemos de Agua meeting in Gijón, industry leaders emphasized the need to treat water as a strategic and critical resource.
Facsa, a key participant in these discussions, highlighted the necessity of long-term planning, improved coordination between administrations, and stable financing mechanisms to renew and adapt water infrastructure to new technological and regulatory demands.
Additionally, the Comunidad General de Riegos del Alto Aragón is organizing an informative session in Huesca titled ‘Irrigation in transition: geopolitics, CAP, and water resilience.’ The event will address how geopolitical instability, energy costs, and changes to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) are impacting European irrigation. Discussions will focus on water security and the efficiency of transport infrastructures to ensure profitable and environmentally responsible agricultural production.
