Water management challenges face mining and environmental sectors in South America

In the Puna region of Argentina, experts emphasize that sustainable mining depends on the effective management of water resources. While water is often not visible on the surface, significant reserves exist in underground aquifers, springs, and wetlands. Geologists note that understanding the circulation, quality, and recharge rates of these aquifers is essential for protecting ecosystems and local communities.

In Peru, community environmental monitors are organizing to address water contamination caused by formal, informal, and illegal mining activities. This issue is compounded by the El Niño phenomenon, which increases the risk of floods and landslides. To strengthen local oversight and political influence, the VI National Meeting of Community Environmental Monitors and Watchmen will be held in Lima. The gathering aims to develop early warning systems for climate crises and present legislative initiatives to institutionalize community environmental monitoring.
