Water management infrastructure updates in the Netherlands and Suriname

In the Netherlands, Waterschap Scheldestromen will open the Boreel pumping station in Middelburg for Heritage Day on September 12, 2026. Built in 1929 and named after designer J. L. Boreel, the monumental facility is essential for draining excess water from Walcheren into the Canal through Walcheren. The station features three red centrifugal pumps and an original diesel engine. Visitors can participate in tours, educational activities for children, and discussions with officials regarding water challenges in Zeeland.

In Suriname, a new pumping installation at Sommelsdijks Kreek was officially commissioned on August 21, 2026. The project aims to strengthen water drainage and reduce flooding in Paramaribo’s historic city center and surrounding residential and tourist areas. The installation, consisting of three new pumps, was funded by a US$ 2.7 million grant from the Japanese government under the Economic and Social Development Programme. Officials noted that the upgrade was necessary after nearly forty years and serves as a symbol of the partnership between Japan and Suriname.
