Water management initiatives advance in Guatemala and Colombia

In Guatemala, legislative efforts to regulate water resources continue with the introduction of Initiative 6816 to Congress. Following the formation of the Water Cabinet in September 2024, the proposal seeks to establish a Water Superintendency, a rights registry, and a system for canons. The initiative aims to address decades of water mismanagement and pollution, though critics note that previous proposals often favored specific interests rather than the general public.

In Colombia, the Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Bogotá (EAAB) shared its water conservation and rationing strategies at the 2026 Regional Dialogue on Water Policy and Sanitation in Montevideo. The presentation detailed technical and operational responses implemented during the water crisis of 2024 and the first half of 2025, specifically addressing low levels in the Chingaza System. The international forum included representatives from various cities facing similar water supply challenges due to climate conditions.
