Water management initiatives reported in Argentina and Spain
In Argentina, provincial and municipal authorities are accelerating infrastructure works to ensure water supply for Cutral Co and Plaza Huincul during the summer. The Provincial Water and Sanitation Entity (Epas) has designed a program to improve the system connected to Lake Los Barreales, which provides 30% of the water for these cities. An investment of approximately 2.1 billion pesos has been authorized to renew mechanical equipment, electrical protection systems, and automation to prevent failures similar to those experienced in February.
In Spain, the Canal d’Urgell is concluding its irrigation campaign with water reserves at the Rialb reservoir exceeding 50% capacity, despite high demand caused by persistent heat and low rainfall. While the availability of water is considered good by the irrigation community, officials noted that extreme temperatures have caused significant losses in crops such as bread, cereals, and fruit, sometimes making production costs difficult to cover. The canal will remain inactive for three weeks before scheduled reopening in October.
