Water management strategies evolve to combat increasing drought risks

As droughts become more frequent, new technological and policy measures are being implemented to manage water scarcity. The startup EAU-LINK has developed a connected device designed to monitor water consumption in real time. By attaching a compact data logger to existing water meters, the technology allows for continuous surveillance and immediate alerts regarding leaks, addressing the issue of invisible water loss that often goes undetected between manual readings.

In addition to technological solutions, some local governments are turning to economic measures. In France, some mayors have implemented progressive or seasonal water pricing to incentivize lower consumption. For example, in the village of Pillemoine, the mayor increased water rates significantly during a drought period, which resulted in a 20% reduction in consumption within two days. These pricing strategies aim to reduce waste and manage the high costs associated with emergency water supplies during shortages.
