Water management strategies for residential gardens and drainage

Effective residential water management requires a comprehensive approach to sourcing, accumulation, distribution, and drainage. For garden irrigation, selecting the correct pump is critical and depends entirely on the water source, such as shallow wells, deep boreholes, rainwater retention tanks, or ponds. The depth, yield, and water quality of the source must be considered, as equipment designed for clean water may not withstand sand, mud, or organic debris.

Regarding excess precipitation, the Ministry of the Environment recommends retaining rainwater on-site whenever possible rather than simply diverting it. To prevent damage to structures, paving, or soil erosion caused by pooling water, homeowners can utilize permeable surfaces, grassed areas, rain gardens, and infiltration elements. The effectiveness of these solutions depends heavily on soil type, as clay-heavy soils absorb water much slower than sandy soils, necessitating appropriately sized infiltration systems.
