Water pipe burst floods community in Rio de Janeiro
A major pipe burst from the utility provider Águas do Rio caused significant flooding in the Rio do Ouro community in Irajá, located in Rio de Janeiro's North Zone. The incident, which began around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, damaged at least 12 residences, destroying furniture and causing structural damage such as collapsed floors and walls.
The Municipal Civil Defense has cordoned off the area and declared one home unsafe for habitation due to collapse risks. The burst has also disrupted water supplies across 25 neighborhoods, including Vista Alegre, Madureira, and Cascadura. Águas do Rio reported that repair teams have been working since the early morning, though no timeline for full normalization has been provided.
This event occurs ahead of scheduled preventive maintenance on the Guandu System by Cedae, which is expected to interrupt water production starting Tuesday morning, affecting the capital and several surrounding cities.
