Water prices rise in Gran Santo Domingo
Residents of Gran Santo Domingo are facing rising costs for bottled water, with prices for a standard jug (botellón) fluctuating between RD$120 and RD$130. This price increase has been sustained for over two months, impacting household economies, particularly in lower-income sectors.
Consumers report that prices vary based on location and service; for instance, home delivery can drive the cost to the RD$130 mark. To mitigate these expenses, some residents are bypassing local corner stores (colmados) to purchase directly from distributors, where prices can be as low as RD$55 per unit. Some shoppers claim that retailers are selling the product at more than double the wholesale price.
There is growing public demand for the National Institute for Consumer Protection (Pro Consumidor) to intervene and monitor these price hikes, as no official regulatory action has been observed to address the sustained increase in this essential commodity.
