Colombia maintains temporary protection for Santurbán massif

The Colombian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has ratified the temporary protection of the western side of the Santurbán massif. The area will remain designated as a temporary Renewable Natural Resources Reserve until March 2027.

To determine long-term conservation measures, the government will conduct hydrological and hydrogeological studies. These scientific investigations aim to identify water sources, characterize aquifers, and understand how groundwater recharges and interacts with surface water. The studies will also assess the vulnerability of aquifers to contamination and evaluate how climate variations and vegetation loss affect the ecosystem's water regulation capacity.
