Water quality reports show mixed bathing conditions in Brazil

Water quality reports in Brazil show varying conditions for coastal and river bathing. In Salvador, Bahia, the Institute of Environment and Water Resources (Inema) has advised against bathing at 24 of the 38 monitored locations. Affected areas include popular spots such as Porto da Barra, Farol da Barra, Pituba, and Piatã. Notably, São Tomé de Paripe remains under environmental investigation due to water quality changes.

In contrast, the Sabino Municipal Beach in São Paulo has been cleared for bathing after 245 days of restrictions. This recovery follows a pilot program using 14 ultrasound-emitting buoys installed by Cetesb to combat excessive algae in a branch of the Tietê River. The technology successfully reduced microcystin levels—a toxin produced by algae—by over 91%, bringing concentrations well below the safety limit.

While Salvador faces significant local challenges, the broader state of Bahia remains relatively favorable, with approximately 70% of the 147 monitored points across its beaches, rivers, and lagoons classified as suitable for bathing.
