Water scarcity and extreme heat strain Austria's Thermenregion

In the summer of 2026 the Thermenregion south of Vienna is experiencing severe water scarcity. About 70 % of Austria’s groundwater monitoring stations record low levels, with more than one in ten at historic lows. The region’s aquifers consist of a shallow Quaternary gravel body that supplies the water works of Baden, Mödling, Wiener Neustadt and parts of Vienna’s drinking water. Because this aquifer is unconfined, it reacts quickly to reduced rainfall and intensive extraction, while deeper, confined layers renew more slowly.

The prolonged drought is also affecting fire‑fighting operations. The Lower Austrian fire service reports that fire‑water ponds are shrinking or drying out, but assures that the hydrant network and water carried in tank‑fire‑vehicles keep the water supply secure. Firefighters are coping with temperatures around 40 °C, which hampers firefighting efforts and raises health concerns, prompting reminders to stay hydrated.
