Water scarcity and groundwater depletion concerns rise in Germany

Environmental concerns regarding water scarcity and groundwater depletion are rising in parts of Germany. In the Höxter district, authorities have issued warnings against extracting water from streams, rivers, and lakes to protect local flora and fauna. Dr. Kathrin Weiß, head of the environmental department for Kreis Höxter, noted that despite legal prohibitions on pumping water from natural bodies during low water levels, some individuals continue to do so for garden irrigation. Residents are encouraged to use rainwater from cisterns instead of natural water sources or tap water.

In Lüneburg, the organization BI Unser Wasser is hosting a lecture on August 18, 2026, to address the decline of groundwater in the Nordheide region. Gerhard Schierhorn, chairman of the Interessengemeinschaft Grundwasserschutz Nordheide, will discuss the causes and consequences of drying streams, moors, and wetlands. The presentation aims to examine whether climate change and increasing water extraction are driving these environmental shifts and what measures can be taken to protect biodiversity and water supplies.
