Water scarcity drives new management strategies in Mexico and Spain

Water scarcity and increasing water stress are driving a shift in how resources are managed across Mexico and Europe. In Mexico, the National Water Commission (Conagua) has identified significant water stress in various regions, necessitating improved efficiency in the use, distribution, treatment, and reuse of water. To address these challenges, the Aquatech Mexico 2026 exhibition will focus on the role of regulation, strategic capital, and digitalization. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and real-time data analytics are being utilized to detect leaks and optimize hydraulic infrastructure.

In Spain, water is increasingly viewed as a strategic asset for economic competitiveness and business resilience rather than just an environmental concern. As one of the European countries most exposed to water stress, the region faces irregular availability due to climate change and extreme weather. Consequently, water management is transitioning from a purely administrative responsibility to a shared challenge where companies must integrate water risks into their core business strategies to ensure operational continuity and mitigate economic impact.
